Leech therapy
Medical leeches are a type of toothed leech that are close relatives of the annelids. The saliva secretion of the leech contains active ingredients with anti-coagulant and anti-inflammatory properties, which is good in treating pain. The anti-coagulants essentially consist of the enzymes hirudin and heparin, thus thinning the “thick” blood and ensuring fresh blood flows to the region bitten by the leech. This detoxifies infected tissue as well as the blood and lymph, thus relieving inflammation and pain.
